Songs of The Ohio State University

My Girl's Too Good for You

My girl's too good for you
She goes to O. S. U.
Goes to all the foot-ball games,
Who told you so?
She is fair and sedate.
Pride of Ohio State-
How in the world'd you find this out?
She told me so.

My son's a temperance man
He goes to Wesleyan,
If he smokes he gets the can--
Who told you so?
He dare not drink or swear
When he's in Delaware--
How in the world'd you find this out?
He told me so.

My girl's too good for you
She goes to O. W. U.
Always goes to Sunday School--,
Who told you so?
She is both good and fair.
Pride of "Old Delaware"-
How in the world'd you find this out?
She told me so.

My Girl's Too Good For You was published in Songs of the Scarlet and Gray, without any musical score or known melody associated with it. Based upon the lyrics, this song was a ballad at Ohio State, which was written in the 1890s. In the 29 November, 1906 Ohio Medical University - Ohio State University Football Program, the lyrics were published; therefore, this song was definitely in use at Ohio State. Incidentally, the aforementioned football program contained Ohio State's new Alma Mater; Carmen Ohio.

Based upon the lyrics, and meter, I had to speculate what the melody of My Girl's Too Good For You could possibly be. Considering there are a number of songs, on this web site, that use popular melodies with new lyrics, it is possible the same could be true for this song. One such song is Aura Lee, which comes very close to the meter of My Girl's Too Good For You, hence, I chose to use Aura Lee. While I have strived to track down and identify every song on this web site, this one proved very elusive, and the only one I had to completely speculate about the melody. One reason I chose this song, was the United States Military Academy at West Point, has a song called The Army Blue, which also uses the melody of Aura Lee. And, like My Girl's Too Good For You, was sung at football games. A rather loose connection to say the least, but a possibility. Finally, searches around the Internet for lyrics similar to My Girl's Too Good For You proved to be a fruitless endeavor.

Presuming that the melody to My Girl's Too Good For You is Aura Lee, you will notice that it the same melody of Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley. Aura Lee was written in 1854.

A special thank you to Dr. Robert B. Stevenson for providing me a copy of the 29 November, 1906 football program "Yells and Songs" page.
